| OWU students participated in a recent spring break mission trip to New Orleans, where they helped renovate houses impacted by Hurricane Katrina. | |||
From 57 countries and 45 states, OWU’s 1,850 students—and many faculty and staff members—come to Delaware, Ohio to explore and experience a life-changing education and to be part of Ohio Wesleyan’s close community of teachers, students, staff members, and alumni. First impressions are important… On any given day, you’ll notice the friendly atmosphere on campus. People stopping to talk on the JayWalk, which runs through the center of campus; the usual noontime lunch crowd in the campus center, eager to catch up on the day’s news or weekend plans; or frequently, groups of students and professors sharing coffee and discussions about a class project. As a student joining our community, you’ll be challenged (in a good way) by your professors. You will have opportunities to complement classroom learning with practical experiences gained during internships and study abroad programs. Through such new programs as our Sagan Fellows courses and the newly funded Theory to Practice grants, OWU students partner with professors and might have the opportunity to live with host families in Mexico while learning about migration experiences; travel to Bolivia to study about ecology and see first hand, the effects of poverty on people living there; or study the evolution and migration patterns of plant genus Xylopia at the New York Botanical Garden. Coming back to campus, students share their experiences in classroom discussions, or more casually, with friends. Picture Yourself…at OWU Students choose to enroll at colleges and universities for many reasons, but most often because in addition to all of those reasons, it just feels right. At Ohio Wesleyan, you’ll develop further your creativity and leadership skills. You can play sports, perform on stage, run for a student government office, or commit some of your time and energy to helping others. OWU recently was, in fact, named as one of six Presidential Awardees in the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll—the highest federal recognition a university can receive for commitment to service learning and civic engagement! Plus, Ohio Wesleyan was named as one of America’s “Hottest Colleges of the Decade” by the pop culture Web site, The Daily Beast. Whatever your eventual choice of academic studies, study trips, service projects, or campus organizations may be, we welcome you and look forward to the possibility of having you on the OWU campus. |
